DONE DEAL: Cape Town City complete the signing of Thulani Serero

Cape Town City head coach Muhsin Ertugal has confirmed the signing of Thulani Serero from the UAE side, Khor Fakkan.

According to the latest reports, Thulani Serero is on his way to the Betway Premiership after playing abroad for almost 14 years.

The 34-year-old has been labeled as one of the best midfielders to ever play for Bafana Bafana and a move back to South Africa is a major deal for the Cape Town based side as they are currently struggling in the league.

When Muhsin Ertugal spoke to the media, he revealed that Thulani Serero went back to Emirates as he had some issues he had to sort out. He further stated that the player is the kind of player they are looking for.

The player will return to South Africa this weekend and will be available for selection when The Citizens take on Amazulu.

Cape Town City are currently sitting in the 10th position, 22 points behind the log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns. They are most likely out of the Betway Premiership race but can still qualify to participate in the CAF competitions next season as they are just eight points behind Polokwane, who are sitting in the 3rd position.

Thulani Serero was born and raised in Soweto, one of the biggest townships in South Africa. Despite having a number of big clubs in Soweto, Thulani Serero never played for a single club in his township. Instead, he started his football career at Ajax Cape Town.

He is the product of Ajax Cape Town (now known as Cape Town Spurs). He spent a number of years in their development team before being promoted to the senior team back in July 2008.

The 34-year-old was one of the best players in the league by that time and was sold to Ajax Amsterdam for €2.5 million, which was one of the biggest transfer deal in the Absa Premiership.

THULANI SEREROʼS FOOTBALL CAREER

Serero achieved a lot with Ajax Amsterdam as he won three league titles with the club and also one Dutch Super Cup.

The player also participated in the UEFA Champions League numerous times with the club. Unfortunately, he never won the UEFA Champions League with the Dutch side.

After spending six years with Ajax Amsterdam, the former Bafana Bafana midfielder eventually left the club on a free transfer and joined Vitesse, a club that is also participating in the Dutch top flight.

He did not spend much time at Vitesse as he left just two years after joining the club. Serero joined the UAE side, Al-Jazira back in August 2019 on an undisclosed fee.

While playing for Al-Jazira in the UAE, Thulani Serero won the league and also Super Cup. After spending four years at Al-Jazira, Serero signed with Khor Fakkan on a free transfer.

He is now set to return to South Africa and will be close to his family, which is what most players dream of when they play abroad.

Despite revealing that they have signed Thulani Serero, Muhsin Ertugal did not disclose what was the transfer fee.
