RUMOURS: Chiefs show interest in signing Micheal Olunga

Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have shown interest in signing Al-duhail SC and Kenyan striker Micheal Olunga.

According to the latest reports, Kaizer Chiefs could seal a deal with yet another international striker when the June transfer window opens.

The 30-year-old is currently playing in the Qatar Super League for Al-duhail SC and has been doing well in the past years.

Kaizer Chiefs did show interest in the player during the previous summer transfer window, however, the deal did not materialize.

According to the Siya crew, Kaizer Chiefs wanted to sign Micheal Olunga last year when they were failing to reach an agreement with Fiston Mayele. The club management were hoping to sign the player at the beginning of the season, if they fail to reach an agreement with the player by that time they were hoping to seal the deal in January 2025.

Amakhosi have decided to sign the DR Congo striker, Makabi Lilepo, however, that does not stop the club from targeting Michael Olunga as they are looking to strengthen their club upfront.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi believes Wandile Duba is more of a winger, rather than playing as a striker. Removing Wandile Duba from the number nine position leaves Amakhosi with only Ranga Chivaviro, Ashley Du Preez and Makapi Lilepo in that position.

Christian Saile is another player who can play as a striker at Kaizer Chiefs but the player is not in the plans of Nasreddine Nabi. He is currently on loan at Supersport united but will return at Amakhosi when the season comes to an end.

MICHEAL OLUNGAʼS FOOTBALL CAREER

The 30-year-old is a well-traveled player who has already played in six countries including his country, Kenya.

He started his football career at Tusker fc and then signed with Thika united back in January 2014. Michael then signed with the biggest club in Gor Mahia fc a year later.

2016 was a breakthrough for the Kenyan striker as he joined the Swedish side, Djurgarden. The club then sold him to the Chinese side, GZ H. Zhicheng for a fee of around €3.4 million.

Micheal Olunga was then loaned to the Spanish side, Girona, which was a one-year loan deal. The player also played in Japan and is now at Qatar.

The Qatari side purchased him for a fee which is around €6 million. That could be a major setback for Amakhosi as they would not be willing to pay that kind of amount for the player.

The market value of Michael Olunga is reportedly around €8 million, according to Transfermarkt. He has also scored nine goals already in the Qatar Super League in just 12 appearances. The player also has two assists in the league, making it 11 goal involvements in just 12 matches.

Not only is the player striving in the league, but the player also has one goal and two assists in just two appearances in the Qatari Stars Cup.

The player’s side will take on Al-Sadd this weekend and Micheal Olunga will be hoping to continue with his good run.
